The Chowder Cook-off on the grounds of the Oriental Marina and Hotel is serious business to professional chefs from local restaurants and home-grown chowder perfectionists happy to display their creations to the tasting public. Volunteer firemen are among the most serious cook-contenders, working all hours and guarding their secrets with care. A small fee gets volunteer judges in large numbers the opportunity to taste and vote. Although some advertise a willingness to be bribed, the title of chowder cook-off champ is awarded by majority rule and with much ado. The public taster system is acclaimed by attendees as the best meal-deal in town. The sponsoring organization, Oriental Woman's Club, serves two good causes, feeding a good portion of the town between 10 AM and 2 PM on a Saturday and putting proceeds to good use with scholarships for deserving students.
